- STEM K12 8: Students engage in self-directed STEM learning guided by educators who are effective facilitators of learning.

Technology is the foundation of the Carrollton High School STEM program. STEM students utilize technology everyday, whether it is in the STEM classroom or at Southwire Engineering Academy, Tanner Medical, or Greenway Medical Technologies. Technology is utilized by teacher and students for classroom presentations and assignments. All the STEM equipment and software, including the Intellitek Rec. Program, AutoDesk Design Academy Software, LearnMate Learning Management System, CNC Mill technology, Lifesize HD video conferencing equipment, Interactive whiteboard, digital projector, student/teacher sound system, student response system, document camera, bluetooth slate, SCORBOT package, laser engraver using corel draw, large/wide format printer, and CNC router are all operated and utilized through the Engineering program computers. |
Our students and interns utilize technology daily and have become proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher), Google Apps for Education (Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Calendar, Drive), Autocad, Inventor, Revit, Apple Programming, Final Cut Pro Video processing, Prezi presentation editor, digital calipers, and many other technology tools. Additionally, teachers and students are engaged using mobile devices and gaming technologies to assist with learning and assessment in programs like Kahoot, Plickers, Zaption and USATestPrep.
Mr. Blakemore runs his Computer Science classroom using a gamified classroom model. To view how his students achieve points, click his Leaderboard Points Sheet. His students also use educational gaming sites such as CodeCombat to learn content and use virtual 3D programming worlds such as Alice, Jeroo, and Scratch to learn how to write programming languages. Mr. Blakemore also uses simulation-based learning in his classes with programs like Aurasma, AppInventor, and Codecademy. Business and Computer Science students use online certification resources provided through Microsoft IT Academy, COMPTIA A+, and Google App Ninja Certification.
Two years ago, our school system implemented a Bring Your Own Device Policy to utilize student devices for teaching and learning in the classroom. In addition to student devices, we have two ChromeBook carts available for teacher check out to use during class and nine computer labs available for reservation during teacher planning periods. Southwire, Tanner Medical, and Greenway provides laptops/desktops to all Engineering Academy interns. Also through grant funding, all teachers were issued Tablet ChromeBooks this fall.
Many teachers at CHS have utilized online classroom management systems such as Google Classroom and Schoology to prepare students for online learning environments, reduce the amount of paper used during class, and facilitate the assignment collection, grading, and feedback process. CHS Teachers enjoy using Online Classroom Mangement Systems with their students. View some of their comments below:

"I post all of my assignments, projects and even administer tests through Schoology. It provides students a "one-stop shop" for all things related to my class. It works great if students are absent or for differentiation purposes. I also use Google Docs and Slides to encourage students to collaborate on assignments."
Robby Blakemore (Computer Science Teacher) |
"I use Google Classroom, and I absolutely love it! It allows me to go paperless and keep accurate accounts of student's grades and whether they turned an assignment in or not. The platform is user friendly with prompts that allow me the option to create assignments, send announcements, or have open dialogue with my students about history."
Desmond Dodson (Social Studies Teacher) |
"I use Google Classroom as a way to communicate and record what we did in class each day (daily agendas, assignments, lectures, links). This helps students who are absent get caught up in class."
Michael Harvey (Social Studies Teacher) |
"I use Google Classroom for when my classes are in a lab. Since I've moved to a lab permanently for 4A, I've started using it daily as a way to post warm-up activities for my students to begin when they get to class. I've done a couple of digital collaboration activities (using Google docs/slides) so far. For quizzes in that class, I plan to use Google Forms (with the Flubaroo add-on for quick grading)."
Alison Hibbard (English/Language Arts Teacher) |
"I use Google Classroom for everything. I post assignments and have students turn them in as well--I never have to make copies anymore. Students also receive reading assignments and we use a common document to make notes."
Katie Holley (English/Language Arts Teacher) |
"I use Edu 2.0 to give online quizzes. The students are able to get instant feedback and see which questions they missed. I have access to the scores and data is provided for me to see the students' progress on the quizzes as well as how they perform compared to other students and classes. For Google Classroom, I place assignments there. Students are able to have access to all assignments, even when they are absent. Also, students are able to use one document to share their thoughts on a book/story/poem read in class. This helps when everyone can instantly give feedback on a topic/discussion."
Bakahai Litman (English/Language Arts Teacher) |
"I use Weebly. My Weebly website "Virtual Martinland" provides students with teacher notes, handouts, and review materials. They can also communicate through various formats such as Remind and email."
Steve Martin (Mathematics Teacher) |
"I use Google classroom because it helps me keep up with assignments and students have access to them 24 hours a day."
Mark McCormick (Social Studies Teacher) |
"Schoology is a vital online course management tool in my classroom. All student work, instructions, tests/quizzes, discussions, etc. are posted there. I also use it to get instant feedback to assess learning."
Valerie Moss Business and Computer Science Teacher |
"In the STEM lab students are exposed to two different online learning platforms. All students are a part of a Google classroom that allows them to create, collaborate and share ideas and project components. It also allows the teacher to monitor the progress and give quick feedback. LearnMate is used by students to access the robotic curriculum. It serves as an online text book that guides students through activities. It is self paced so students can move at their own pace."
